Should You Be Concerned About Rusty Gutters?


A homeowner should be concerned about having rusty gutters.  Depending on your climate, a fair amount of rain can contribute to rust build-up on your gutters.  If you keep your gutters well maintained they can last for a very long time, but aside from regular cleanings, rust is a very big concern.  


​Keep in mind that a little rust is more of a minor frustration and mainly affects the overall look of the exterior of the house.  But rust unkempt can completely ruin your gutter system.
 
What is Rust and Why is it Bad For My Gutters? 


When certain types of metals like iron or steel interact with water rusting can occur.  Rust eats away at metals and can cause holes in your gutters.  Rust also affects the appearance of your home and your curb appeal. 


But most importantly, rust on your gutters means serious trouble.  A rusted gutter system will compromise how effectively your gutters function and a replacement may be necessary.  Rust will stop your gutters from pulling stormwater away from the foundation of your house.


Rust is what happens when oxygen, water, and certain types of metal interact, particularly iron and steel. It’s a corrosive problem that eats away at metals, causing holes and reducing structural stability.


​Modern building materials are treated with anti-rust paints, and aluminum tends to last longer than older metal compounds. But no matter what building materials you have in your home, rust, and corrosion may creep in over time.

How Do I Spot Rust on My Gutters?

To discover rust on your gutters, you must not only check the outside of the gutters but the inside as well.  Typically, rust on the outside of your gutters is easy to find.  It is that reddish-brownish color that stands out clear as day on clean metal.  But, you should also be looking inside the gutter itself to check for rust.  A few random spots should be ok, as long as you are checking on them frequently, especially during rainy seasons.  But more than a few spots on the inside or outside could mean major damage to your gutters.  This is the point where you consider replacement or repairs. 

Can You Repair Minor Rust Damage to Your Gutters?

Minor rust damage can be easy to repair, you can scrub it away with a wire brush.  After you scrub the rust, wait for the gutter to dry, and then treat it with a metal primer that helps keep the rust away.
